Derek Dobson

Derek Dobson has more than 30 years of experience in the pension industry. Currently leading one of Canada’s most sustainable pension plans at CAAT, he sits as a member of the Pension Policy Council at the C.D. Howe Institute and served as co-chair of the Canadian Public Pension Leadership Council (CPPLC). He is a founding faculty member of the Masters of Trust Management Standards program at the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans and a former Board member at the Association of Canadian Pension Management (ACPM). Under his leadership, CAAT opened modern defined benefit (DB) pension coverage to all industries across Canada. Over 350 employers currently participate in the CAAT Plan, including Brink’s Canada, Rio Tinto Alcan, the Conference Board of Canada, the Canadian Coalition for Good Governance and Candu Energy. Derek was awarded the 2023 Institutional Connect Lifetime Achievement Award and passionately advocates for innovative solutions to improve access to efficient, high-performing pensions. Derek is a featured speaker at international pension conferences and a contributing expert to Plans & Trusts, BNN Bloomberg, The Globe & Mail, Talent Canada, HR Professionals Magazine, Benefits Canada and Canadian HR Reporter.
